Sultan Ibrahim, currently on a four-day state visit to China that commenced on September 19, became emotional while discussing his late son, Tunku Abdul Jalil Iskandar Ibrahim, with Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 20 at the Great Hall of the People.
The Malaysian King thanked China for assisting Tunku Abdul Jalil with a liver transplant at the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University in Guangdong on December 10, 2014.
Despite the successful surgery, Tunku Abdul Jalil, who struggled with stage four liver cancer, passed away a year later at the age of 25.
Both Xi Jinping and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi were visibly moved by Sultan Ibrahim’s recount.
Sultan Ibrahim mentioned his Chinese ancestry traced back to his great-grandmother, Huang Yajiao, from Guangdong.
Xi directed officials to trace Sultan Ibrahim’s family roots.
This visit marks the first state visit by a Malaysian King to China in a decade, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
Sultan Ibrahim praised China’s progress and extended an invitation to Xi to visit Malaysia.
