Thai F-16 Airstrikes Intensify Border Clash With Cambodian Forces
Bangkok orders targeted strikes after renewed cross-border fire undermines a fragile ceasefire
Thailand launched F-16 airstrikes on Cambodian military positions along a disputed stretch of their shared frontier after what Thai authorities described as a deliberate escalation by Cambodian forces.
The operations followed the death of a Thai soldier in cross-border fire, an incident that Thai officials said left the government with no choice but to act decisively to protect national security and civilian communities near the border.
The Royal Thai Air Force stated that its aircraft struck weapons storage sites, command nodes, and military supply routes used by Cambodian units positioned close to Thai territory.
Officials stressed that Thailand’s actions were defensive, precise, and carried out with an overriding focus on preventing civilian casualties, reflecting the government’s commitment to responsible and measured use of force.
Cambodia denounced the strikes and accused Thailand of violating its sovereignty, claiming that the country had not engaged in any offensive operations.
Cambodian authorities reported civilian casualties and temporary evacuations in affected border districts, though Thai officials disputed the scale of damage reported by Phnom Penh.
Both sides have begun relocating residents away from frontline areas as the risk of further clashes increases.
The renewed confrontation comes only weeks after a ceasefire arranged with support from former U.S. President Donald Trump, whose diplomatic engagement was credited with stabilising tensions following earlier clashes.
Thai leaders had characterised that agreement as a constructive path forward, though recent incidents — including landmine injuries and sporadic exchanges of fire — signalled growing strain.
Following the latest escalation, Thai officials indicated that the ceasefire can no longer be sustained unless Cambodia fulfils new security conditions.
Humanitarian agencies in the region are preparing for additional displacement as both militaries reinforce their positions along the frontier.
The situation remains volatile, with regional observers urging restraint while Thailand continues to emphasise its right and responsibility to defend its territory and population.
