Thailand Hosts Miss Universe 2025 Amid Diplomatic Ripple for Cambodia’s Entry
Bangkok welcomes over 100 contestants, including Cambodia’s Miss Universe Cambodia 2025 amid bilateral tensions
Thailand has officially welcomed more than a hundred contestants to the 74th edition of the Miss Universe 2025 pageant, which will run from early November through 21 November across Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya under the theme “The Grand Universe: The Power of Love, The Power of Thailand”.
Among the delegates is Cambodia’s Thai Neary Socheata—also known as Fiyata—whose participation at the event stirred notable debate after her national licence-holder faction announced Cambodia’s withdrawal just one day earlier, citing “unresolved situations between Cambodia and Thailand”.
Fiyata arrived in Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to a warm reception from Cambodian fans and later posted on social media: “I’ve arrived safely in Thailand.
Thank you for the warm welcome, kindness and support from everyone.
Your love truly means so much to me.” Her independent decision to compete, despite her country’s federation’s earlier statement, underscores the complex interplay between sport, culture and diplomacy in the region.
The hosting company, led by Nawat Itsaragrisil of Miss Universe Thailand organiser MGI PCL, welcomed 103 contestants at a ceremony at Chatrium Riverside Hotel on Sunday.
Thailand’s own delegate, Praveenar Singh, who was crowned Miss Universe Thailand 2025 in August, is among the finalists representing the host nation.
Observers note that Thailand’s staging of the pageant reflects both its cultural prestige and its tourism-strategy ambitions.
Despite the traditional glamour of the pageant, organisers indicated that the programme will be moderated to align with the national mourning period following the passing of Her Majesty The Queen Mother, meaning fewer extravagant excesses and more culturally attuned ceremonies.
With final events scheduled at nondescript venues such as Impact Muang Thong Thani in Nonthaburi, and supporting events set up in Phuket and Pattaya, Thailand is positioning the pageant as both a celebration of global beauty and a showcase of its hospitality economy.
The inclusion of Cambodia’s contestant is being watched as a symbolic moment of regional cultural exchange—even as geopolitical sensitivities linger.
