Thailand Moves to Secure BIE Recognition for Horticultural Expo 2029 in Korat
Government advances formal bid to host international horticultural exhibition in Nakhon Ratchasima, reinforcing regional development ambitions
Thailand has formally advanced its bid for international recognition of the Horticultural Expo 2029 Korat, seeking endorsement from the Bureau International des Expositions as part of a strategic effort to position the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima as a global hub for green innovation and sustainable tourism.
Officials confirmed that the government has submitted the required documentation and is engaging in ongoing consultations with the Paris-based intergovernmental body responsible for overseeing and approving major world and specialised expos.
The proposed exhibition, scheduled for 2029, aims to showcase advances in horticulture, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity conservation and climate-resilient urban design.
The Korat proposal outlines a multi-month event featuring international pavilions, research exhibitions and cultural programming designed to attract millions of visitors.
Thai authorities have emphasised that the expo would not only highlight global best practices in food security and environmental stewardship but also generate long-term infrastructure, employment and investment benefits for the region.
Nakhon Ratchasima, commonly known as Korat, is regarded as a strategic gateway to Thailand’s northeastern corridor.
The government has identified the expo as a catalyst for accelerating transport upgrades, smart-city development and eco-tourism initiatives in line with national economic transformation goals.
Senior officials have framed the bid as part of Thailand’s broader diplomatic and economic outreach, underscoring the country’s experience in hosting large-scale international events and its commitment to sustainable development.
Preparatory work is already under way, including master planning for the exhibition site, environmental assessments and coordination with international partners.
If granted formal recognition by the Bureau International des Expositions, the Horticultural Expo 2029 Korat would join the global calendar of specialised expos, reinforcing Thailand’s standing as a dynamic host nation and a regional leader in sustainable innovation.
