Commerce Minister Takes Strong Action Against Online Sale of Counterfeit Branded Goods
As a deputy premier, Phumtham has directed the department to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) secure patents for their products to prevent imitation.
He also mentioned plans to boost the number of Thai GI (geographical indication) products, utilizing them to enhance Thailand's international soft power.
Intellectual Property Department Director-General Vuttikrai Leewiraphan declared a forthcoming agreement with 30 copyright holders and three major online platforms Lazada, Shopee, and TikTok Shop to combat piracy.
These businesses will be able to report counterfeits directly to the platforms.
Vuttikrai added that the department is working with Facebook to address copyright violations, with Facebook in the process of creating tools to identify and remove infringing goods.
Thus far, the three online platforms have taken down 960 listings of counterfeit items, including fake ink cartridges, footwear, apparel, beauty products, and car parts, after being notified of copyright infringement.
