Gen Z Cuts Back on Dating as a Night Out Nears $200

Rising restaurant prices, transport, grooming costs and paid dating-app features are pushing many young adults towards cheaper dates, fewer outings or time away from the dating market.
For many members of Generation Z, dating is becoming another expense that must compete with rent, groceries, transport and saving for the future.

The cost of a meal, drinks and getting ready for a night out has risen sharply since the pandemic, while paid features on dating apps can add a recurring charge before two people have met at all.

One 2026 consumer survey put the average all-in cost of a date for Gen Z respondents at $205, including food, drinks, transport and grooming.

Nearly half of Gen Z respondents said dating costs were interfering with their financial goals.

Survey findings are not a measure of every young adult’s experience, but they point to a broader affordability pressure on what has traditionally been treated as discretionary spending.

Restaurant prices have been a major part of the change.

Menu prices rose substantially between 2020 and 2025, even as the overall pace of inflation later eased.

A dinner-and-drinks date that once seemed routine can now cost well above $100 in many cities, particularly after tips and travel.

For people at the start of their careers, that outlay can make repeated first dates difficult to sustain.

The financial strain is also altering dating habits rather than simply ending them.

Coffee, walks, picnics, museum days, board games and cooking at home are becoming more common alternatives to restaurant-led dates.

Some younger adults are reducing the number of people they meet, postponing dating until their finances feel steadier or choosing to remain single by preference.

Dating companies have noticed the shift.

Several platforms have promoted lower-cost date ideas, while others have used discounts and incentives to encourage users to go out.

That response reflects a wider problem for an industry built on regular engagement: people can download an app for free, but the social life it is meant to create is increasingly expensive.

Money is not the only explanation for Gen Z’s changing relationship habits.

Dating-app fatigue, concerns about safety, shifting expectations around commitment and a greater acceptance of single life all play a role.

What is clear is that affordability has become part of the romantic calculation, and low-cost dates are emerging as a practical answer to it.
