Flood warnings have been issued for five northeastern provinces in Thailand, including Bung Kan, Nakhon Phanom, Mukdahan, Amnart Charoen, and Ubon Ratchathani, due to rapidly rising water levels in the Mekong River.

The Office of the National Water Resources reported significant downstream floodwater flow that could lead to inundation this week.

In Nong Khai, business activities in Muang district have been halted due to severe flooding, although water levels are slowly receding.

Municipal officials have raised red flags in some communities, advising residents to stay updated.

In Nakhon Phanom, municipal mayor Niwat Chiawiriyabunya said that the water level is still three meters below critical levels, but preparations are in place, including a temporary shelter at Nakhon Phanom stadium.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department is monitoring a low-pressure system near the Philippines, which may develop into a tropical storm and impact northern Vietnam on Friday, potentially bringing more heavy rain to Thailand.

Seasonal flooding has already claimed the lives of 22 people since mid-August, with 12 fatalities in Chiang Rai province.
