A Polish couple were detained by authorities on Koh Phangan in Surat Thani for public nudity, claiming they were expressing their love
On Monday, a Polish couple was arrested on the tourist island of Koh Phangan in Surat Thani, Thailand, after being spotted naked on Ban Tai Road at 4:30pm.
Local residents reported the incident to police, who arrived at the scene and documented the evidence before instructing the couple to get dressed.
The 27-year-old man and 24-year-old woman claimed they had removed their clothing to cuddle as a way to express their love for each other.
Police informed them that public nudity in Thailand is a punishable offense, carrying a fine of up to 5,000 baht.
Following negative drug tests, the woman admitted to the offense and was fined 5,000 baht before being released.
However, her partner became agitated and was referred for a psychiatric examination at Koh Phangan Hospital.
Authorities have also requested the revocation of their visas.
According to Surat Thani's deputy governor, Theeroot Supawibulpol, instances of nude sunbathing on Koh Phangan's beaches are common, and local officials regularly arrest and fine those found in violation of the law.
