Prime Minister Reveals New Strategy to Combat Drug Abuse
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced a comprehensive strategy to combat drug abuse on Tuesday. The initiative, which targets to diminish the drug problem, was unveiled at the Bitec Exhibition Hall in Bang Na, in front of government officials and public sector representatives.
Mr. Srettha mentioned his plan addresses the current urgent issues surrounding narcotics, including recent cases of drug trafficking, corruption, and the disposal of a record-breaking 340 tonnes of narcotics.
The plan integrates drug suppression into the national agenda and introduces a scheme designed to prevent illegal drugs from crossing into the country, focusing on the northern border and provinces like Tak, Kanchanaburi, and Ranong, as well as combating drug use in Bangkok and the deep South.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of rehabilitation for those with addiction-induced health issues, especially in 30 provinces most affected by drugs, referring to addicts as patients who need treatment.
He proposed a "five-dimensional" collaborative approach engaging governors, police, medical staff, and provincial leaders to take an active role from the outset.
Success measures over the next four years would involve new performance indicators to assess the effectiveness of domestic drug suppression efforts.
