The Thai Industry Ministry has urged Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers to use at least 40% of parts sourced locally in Thailand to bolster the domestic automotive supply chain.
This request follows discussions with GAC Aion New Energy Automobile, a subsidiary of Guangzhou Automobile Corporation (GAC), which has committed to the 40% local content threshold.
Industry Minister Pimphattra Wichaikul emphasized the need for support for Thai auto parts manufacturers, who are traditionally focused on internal combustion engine components, as the industry shifts towards electric mobility technology.
The Board of Investment (BoI) also held talks with Chinese EV firms, including Changan Automobile and Neta, to encourage the use of Thai-made parts, with commitments from these companies to increase local content proportions.
The BoI has supported 80 billion baht in investments in the EV sector over the past few years, promoting industry growth through incentives, while continuing to support internal combustion engine and hybrid vehicle manufacturers.
