Thailand Unveils Ambitious Plans to Elevate Phuket as a Premium Tourist Destination
Prime Minister Shinawatra outlines a comprehensive strategy addressing infrastructure, safety, and sustainability to enhance Phuket's global appeal.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has announced an extensive plan to transform Phuket into a premium tourist destination, highlighting a need for substantial infrastructure investments and enriched tourist experiences.
During a strategic meeting held at Phuket International Airport, the Prime Minister engaged with top officials, including Tourism and Sports Minister Sorawong Thienthong, Permanent Secretary Natthriya Thaweevong, and Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat, to tackle pressing developmental challenges in the province.
Governor Sophon reported a robust recovery in Phuket's tourism sector, with nearly 13 million visitors in 2024, marking a 14.14% increase from the previous year.
The province currently manages an average of 368 flights daily from 53 cities across 21 countries, contributing to revenue exceeding 481 billion baht.
The government's development strategy prioritizes six critical areas:
Transport Infrastructure: Fast-tracked projects include the Kathu-Patong Tunnel and a new expressway linking Muang Mai, Koh Kaew, and Kathu.
Plans also encompass implementing an AI-controlled traffic light system and developing a light rail network to alleviate congestion.
Water Management: Addressing future water shortages due to urban expansion is a key concern.
Phuket's current wastewater treatment capacity of 85,862 cubic meters per day requires significant enhancement, with new systems being planned in collaboration with the China Water Environment Group.
Waste Management: With 1,100 tonnes of daily waste generation, a second incinerator capable of processing 500 tonnes daily is under construction.
Plans for a new waste disposal center in Bang Khanun Forest Park, Thalang District, are also underway.
Disaster Prevention: The province is seeking a 263.6 million baht budget for flood protection infrastructure along the Tha Ruea-Koh Kaew Canal.
Landslide prevention efforts are particularly focused on high-risk areas such as Karon and Kamala.
Tourist Safety: Enhancements include expanded CCTV coverage and the establishment of a volunteer-based tourist security system.
The Prime Minister proposed a 'Boat Taxi' service to boost maritime transport and tourism opportunities.
Healthcare: There is a push for a new cancer and radiation therapy center at Vachira Phuket Hospital, aimed at serving patients from Phuket, Phang Nga, and Krabi provinces.
Prime Minister Shinawatra emphasized increasing per capita tourist spending while ensuring local businesses benefit.
She advocated for rigorous law enforcement to tackle issues posed by influential individuals potentially threatening public safety and order.
Concluding her visit, Prime Minister Shinawatra attended the opening of the Thailand International Boat Show 2025 at Phuket Yacht Haven, reinforcing the government's commitment to promoting luxury tourism.
