Bangkok Airways Moves to Expand Fleet Amid Tourism Surge Linked to 'The White Lotus'
The airline aims to enhance its operations and capitalize on increased passenger demand, particularly for flights to Koh Samui.
Bangkok Airways is set to place an order for up to 30 new aircraft, intending to renew its aging fleet and prepare for a significant upswing in tourism, buoyed by the success of the television series _The White Lotus_.
The airline plans to engage manufacturers such as Airbus, Boeing, and Embraer, with a commitment to acquire at least 20 single-aisle jets in the first half of the year, along with options for an additional 10 jets.
This expansion reflects the airline's goal to grow its total fleet to a minimum of 30 aircraft over the next four to five years, which includes leasing arrangements.
Currently, Bangkok Airways operates a fleet of 25 jets, some of which are nearing two decades in service.
The company’s routes connect Bangkok with major tourist destinations, including Koh Samui, a key filming location for the latest season of _The White Lotus_, where Bangkok Airways also owns the airport.
The show's widespread popularity is projected to catalyze a rise in tourist arrivals to Thailand, with government estimates predicting a record 40 million visitors in the current year.
Chief Executive Officer Puttipong Prasarttong-Osoth indicated that the airline has already documented a 14% increase in advance flight bookings for the second quarter of the year, despite this period typically being low season for Thai tourism.
Projections suggest that Bangkok Airways will carry 10% to 20% more passengers this year to Koh Samui, exceeding the 2.7 million passengers recorded in 2024. The airline, thanks to its ownership of the island’s airport, effectively holds a monopoly on flights to this popular destination.
To accommodate the anticipated surge in traffic, Bangkok Airways plans to commence a renovation project at the Koh Samui airport, worth approximately 1.5 billion baht, in the latter half of this year.
This upgrade is set to last for three years, during which the airport will continue its operations.
The airline has also received approval to increase its daily flights from 50 to 73.
Overall, Bangkok Airways is on track to serve a record 4.7 million passengers in this fiscal year, a significant increase from the 4.3 million passengers reported in 2024. This expansion aligns strategically with anticipated growth in Thailand’s tourism sector, driven in part by international media exposure.
