Bangkok Implements New Daily Minimum Wage of 400 Baht for Unskilled Workers Starting July 1
The Wage Committee's decision focuses on unskilled workers in Bangkok and select industries in other provinces.
The tripartite Wage Committee approved a new daily minimum wage of 400 baht for unskilled workers in Bangkok, set to take effect from July 1, as confirmed by committee chairman Boonsong Thapchaiyuth, who serves as Permanent Secretary of the Labour Ministry.
In additional measures, the 400-baht minimum wage will also apply to selected sectors in other provinces, specifically targeting the hotel and entertainment industries.
Following a three-hour meeting, the committee, which includes five representatives from the government, employers, and employees, reached a consensus on the wage adjustment.
This proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet for formal endorsement.
For areas outside Bangkok, the new wage will be applicable specifically to unskilled workers in the tourism and service industries.
The criteria for the wage increase include:
- Hotels rated two stars or higher with a minimum of 50 rooms.
- Entertainment venues defined under the Entertainment Venue Act, including karaoke bars and cocktail lounges.
It is estimated that this wage increase will benefit approximately 700,000 workers across Thailand.
To assist businesses in adapting to increased wage expenses, the Labour Ministry plans to collaborate with six banks to provide 30 billion baht in soft loans to support affected employers.
