A surfer was killed this morning (Saturday) in a shark attack at one of Sydney’s beaches in Australia.
According to local police, this is the first fatal shark attack in the city in three and a half years.
The victim, who has not yet been identified, was attacked shortly after 10 a.m. local time at Long Reef Beach, located in the northern part of the New South Wales capital.
He was pulled from the water by other surfers at the scene but had lost a significant amount of blood and was pronounced dead at the site.
According to police, two pieces of a surfboard were recovered and sent for examination.
“He suffered catastrophic injuries,” said a police official from Sydney’s Northern Beaches unit.
Authorities have not yet determined the species of shark responsible for the attack.
Several beaches in the area have been closed as a precaution.
