Revised fee structure aims to promote household waste sorting
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will introduce revised garbage collection fees next June to encourage residents to sort their waste.
This decision follows the city council's unanimous approval of the ordinance on October 30, 2023.
Deputy Governor Jakkapan Phiewngam stated that the new ordinance will take effect 180 days after its publication in the Royal Gazette.
Replacing the flat rate of 80 baht per household, the new fee structure charges households based on the amount and type of waste generated.
Households producing less than 20 liters or four kilograms of sorted waste per day will pay a fee of 20 baht monthly, while unsorted waste incurs a fee of 60 baht.
For households generating over 20 liters but no more than one cubic meter or 200 kilograms of waste daily, the fee is set at 120 baht per 20 liters.
Large waste producers exceeding one cubic meter or 200 kilograms per day will face a charge of 8,000 baht per cubic meter, with incentives to sort waste to reduce volume and fee costs.
Residents wishing to participate in this waste sorting initiative must register through the BKK Waste Pay mobile app or at their local district office, presenting evidence of household waste management to qualify for reduced fees.
Mr. Jakkapan also mentioned that additional registration options, such as through garbage collection officers and the BMA's official website, are being considered.
