Cabinet Contemplates Reducing Liquor Costs and Trimming Airport Duty-Free Shops
The ministry's permanent secretary, Lavaron Sangsnit, believes that these initiatives will encourage visitors to spend more within the country, benefiting local businesses.
King Power, a major duty-free operator, supports these changes, seeing them as a push for tourist activity and the economy. Reducing alcohol taxes, including on wine and traditional local brews, is meant to offer tourists attractively priced beverages, aligning with Thailand's image as a hospitable paradise.
The Finance Ministry seeks to promote community-based tourism by making local liquors more accessible to visitors. With an anticipated surge of tourists during the New Year, the measures, intended to be permanent, may be implemented starting January 1.
Ekniti Nitithanprapas, head of the Excise Department, anticipates that reductions in wine and local liquor taxes will position Thailand as a top shopping and tourism destination.
Despite potential revenue losses, increased spending is expected. Tax reductions also include lowering import tariffs on wines, a measure currently under review by the Fiscal Policy Office.
