Cambodian Prime Minister Says He Urged US Support for Immediate Ceasefire and Implementation of Kuala Lumpur Peace Deal
Hun Manet reiterates Cambodia’s commitment to peaceful resolution of border conflict and full adherence to previous agreements
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said he spoke by phone with United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Christmas night to press for an immediate ceasefire in the ongoing border conflict with Thailand and renewed implementation of the peace agreement reached in Kuala Lumpur.
In a statement posted to his official social media, Hun Manet emphasised Cambodia’s “firm commitment” to the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement and reiterated his hope that both sides would uphold existing accords and mechanisms to resolve the border dispute and build lasting peace.
Hun Manet said he discussed developments along the Cambodia–Thailand frontier and underscored Cambodia’s desire for a cessation of hostilities, arguing that peaceful negotiation and full implementation of previously agreed terms remain the best path forward.
He noted that Secretary Rubio conveyed that the United States desires to see a lasting peace between the two countries and encouraged efforts to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible.
Hun Manet highlighted that Cambodia will continue to follow the spirit of the Kuala Lumpur Joint Statement and hopes that both nations will work together under its framework.
The call comes against the backdrop of renewed clashes that resumed in early December, despite a ceasefire and broader peace framework signed in October at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.
That agreement, witnessed by Malaysia’s Prime Minister and U.S. President Donald Trump, outlined steps for ending hostilities and mechanisms for monitoring and dialogue.
Hun Manet’s remarks reaffirm Cambodia’s stance that peaceful resolution and adherence to agreed mechanisms are central to restoring stability.
The conflict has involved artillery exchanges and displacement of large numbers of civilians along the lengthy border, prompting diplomatic engagement by regional and global partners seeking de-escalation and the resumption of negotiated peace.
Hun Manet’s appeal to the United States underscores Cambodia’s efforts to align international support behind its call for an immediate ceasefire and continuation of peace efforts under the Kuala Lumpur framework.
