Colombia Unveils Nearly 21ft Bronze Statue of Shakira in Her Hometown
A 21-foot tall bronze statue of singer Shakira has been unveiled in Barranquilla, Colombia, her birthplace. The sculpture, honoring the Colombian and Barranquilleras women, stands in tribute to her iconic dance moves, reputedly started in a local Lebanese restaurant when she was just four years old.
On Instagram, Shakira showcased the statue, which depicts her signature hip movement, and shared her excitement for the homage. She also posted images of her proud parents posing before the statue, admitting the tribute overwhelmed her.
While impressive, Shakira's statue doesn't claim the title for the largest pop icon statue; that goes to the 26-foot 'Forever Marilyn' in Palm Springs, where Marilyn Monroe experienced initial fame. The Monroe statue faced criticism for its overt sexuality, a charge Shakira's effigy has so far avoided.
Crafted by artist Yino Márquez and his team, the statue received Shakira's praise for their talent. Aside from the statue, the singer recently made headlines with a new song about her ex-partner, Gerard Piqué, and settling a tax fraud case in Spain with a large fine and additional penalties to avoid prison. She cited personal reasons, her children, and her career as the driving factors for reaching a settlement.
