Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai announced after a committee meeting that four specialized task forces will be created to improve border trade and address related challenges by collaborating with the private sector and various government departments.
The task forces will focus on enhancing Thailand's trade competitiveness, increasing exports, streamlining border procedures, leveraging international agreements, and encouraging investment in border regions.
Additionally, a strategy for the 2024-2027 period has been outlined to upgrade three key border checkpoints and improve trade logistics, particularly by creating an external X-ray inspection point at the Mae Sot checkpoint.
Despite a slight decline in trade in the first 10 months of the year, with exports and imports decreasing by 3.26% and 1.75% respectively, Thailand's cross-border and transit trade in 2022 rose by 1.44%, reaching 1.79 trillion baht.
