French President Emmanuel Macron has endorsed Thailand's initiative to establish a visa-free agreement with Schengen Zone countries, shared Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin following their discussions in Paris.
The leaders also conferred on progressing towards a Thailand-EU free trade deal, with expectations for a conclusion within 18 months. Talks on military cooperation were on the agenda, and further dialogue is planned.
The visa exemption campaign could gain momentum after the 2024 European Parliament election, with a resolution potentially by year's end. Visa liberalization promises benefits for tourism, business, and broader collaboration between Thailand and Schengen countries.
In addition to trade talks, both nations anticipate reciprocal business delegations in the coming months, and Macron plans to revisit Thailand the following year. PM Srettha emphasizes Thailand's ambition to be a reigonal hub across various sectors, inviting France to join these efforts.
On the cultural front, PM Srettha proposed integrating Thai silk into French fashion more substantially. He has engaged with over 20 French business leaders across multiple industries and discussed with Formula 1 executives the possibility of Thailand hosting a Grand Prix, potentially by 2027.
