Malaysian prison cookies, shared by former Queen Azizah, are highly sought-after
Women inmates at Bentong Prison in Pahang, Malaysia, are baking popular cakes and cookies using recipes provided by their royal patron, former Queen consort of Pahang, Tengku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah.
The ex-Queen, also Malaysia’s Queen consort from 2019 to 2024, taught inmates to prepare seven varieties of baked goods on March 27.
These baked treats, alongside "asam pedas" paste and "rendang betawi," have garnered significant demand ahead of Eid al-Fitr. Popular items include Mazola and Arab cookies, according to Bentong Prison Superintendent Mohd Zulkifli Zakaria.
Despite high prices, there's a steady demand for these goods, made from the Queen's own recipes and available year-round, not just for Hari Raya.
The initiative began in 2018 when Tunku Azizah shared her recipes for 12 cookie types with the inmates, all certified halal. The baking project is part of her role as the Royal Patron of the Prison Department’s Arts and Crafts, aiming to impart her pastry-making skills.
These products are exclusively available at Bentong Prison’s My Pride sales gallery and the Malaysian Prison Department Cooperative.
