Massive Rally in Pathum Thani Protests Alleged Assault on LGBTQ+ Student
Hundreds gather to demand accountability after an alleged attack on a junior LGBTQ+ student.
On the night of February 8, 2025, hundreds of LGBTQ+ individuals and allies assembled at an apartment building in the Rangsit area, near Bangkok University, to protest an alleged assault involving an LGBTQ+ student.
The rally commenced around 11 PM, with attendees calling for an apology from the alleged assailant, who is reported to have attacked a junior LGBTQ+ student.
The incident in question occurred at a noodle shop on February 7. The victim has stated that they suffered burns to their back, neck, and arms after allegedly being splashed with hot soup.
Additionally, the victim reported physical assault and having their hair forcibly cut during the incident.
Following the attack, the victim filed a formal police complaint and sought assistance from Kanthat Pongpaiboonvej, known colloquially as “Good Samaritan” Kan Chompalang, who later participated in the rally.
In a statement to the crowd, Mr. Kanthat expressed concern that there may be other similar incidents and pledged to provide support to all victims of such attacks.
During the rally, another individual shared their experience, alleging they were surrounded by a group of 15 people, during which they were struck on the face with a slipper.
The gathering reflects broader concerns within the LGBTQ+ community regarding safety and violence, as well as a call for greater accountability for those who perpetrate such acts.
The Pathum Thani protest follows a series of incidents that have raised awareness about the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals in Thailand.
