More Than Half of Thai Workers Engaged in the Informal Sector
These workers, especially in agriculture, earn significantly less than their formal sector counterparts. The NSO's annual survey revealed that these informal workers, primarily aged between 40 and 59, often lack stable hours, wages, and legal protections.
While the total workforce counts 40.1 million, including 5.1 million aged over 60, the majority with basic education are informally employed. The agricultural sector comprises 55.4% of these workers, who earn about half as much as those in formal employment.
Furthermore, nearly 28% face issues with wages, job stability, and excessive work. Ms. Piyanut emphasizes the need for social security measures to enhance the well-being and living standards of the informal sector.
