Phuket is set to earn geographical indication (GI) status for its distinctive 7-colour lobster, according to Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property (DIP).
DIP's director-general, Vuttikrai Leewiraphan, announced that the department is gathering data from local entrepreneurs and inspecting lobster farms to register this unique seafood delicacy.
This initiative aims to boost tourism and the local economy in line with the government's strategy to leverage the country’s cultural influence.
Phuket, a leading tourist destination on the Andaman coast with over 10 million visitors annually, generates significant revenue for the community.
Vuttikrai stressed that additional GI products could enhance the visibility of local businesses and attract more tourists. GI status ensures intellectual property protection and maintains product quality.
The 7-colour lobster is known for its vibrant shell, large size, and strong antennae, typically weighing between 3.5 to 4.5 kilograms. These lobsters are farmed along the Andaman coastline and feature prominently in Phuket's cuisine and at the annual Phuket Lobster Festival.
Currently, Phuket boasts two GI products, Phuket pineapple and Phuket pearl, with another candidate, the Phuket garcinia or "buffalo orange," in the registration pipeline.
