Russia Welcomes Cambodia-Thailand Ceasefire Talks and Calls for Peaceful Resolution
Moscow praises diplomatic dialogue and urges restraint as border clashes continue to claim lives and displace civilians
Russia has publicly welcomed renewed ceasefire talks between Cambodia and Thailand and called on both nations to seek a peaceful resolution to their protracted border conflict, emphasising the importance of dialogue and restraint to prevent further civilian suffering.
In statements issued on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokeswoman highlighted Moscow’s support for diplomatic efforts and reiterated that longstanding disputes should be resolved through negotiation rather than force.
The remarks come as Cambodia and Thailand’s militaries began discussions aimed at resuming a truce after weeks of intense fighting along their shared frontier, which has resulted in significant casualties and widespread displacement.
Russia noted that both countries are traditional partners and urged them to act with unity and solidarity in the spirit of regional cooperation under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The ministry underscored its consistent advocacy for resolving disputes by peaceful means, stressing that restraint is vital to minimise harm to civilians and protect regional stability.
The conflict, which reignited in early December after a collapse of a previous ceasefire, has drawn international diplomatic engagement, with ASEAN, China, the United States and other actors encouraging both sides to halt hostilities and return to negotiated solutions.
Moscow’s comments reflect a broader international consensus calling for de-escalation and the implementation of agreed peace mechanisms.
As talks continue, observers say that sustained diplomatic engagement will be critical to achieving a durable cessation of hostilities and laying the groundwork for long-term stability on the Cambodia-Thailand border.
