The Royal Thai Police report 306 alleged victims losing 118 million baht due to direct-sales company The iCon Group's scam. The company used celebrities to promote business courses, then persuaded attendees to recruit members and buy products, resulting in financial loss. Police have set up a center to collect complaints and conducted raids in Bangkok to gather evidence.
The Royal Thai Police (RTP) announced that 306 alleged victims have been defrauded by The iCon Group, a direct-sales company.
The victims have reported a total loss of 118 million baht incurred through investments in products for resale promoted by the company.
Celebrities associated with The iCon Group reportedly marketed online business courses at low prices, subsequently persuading attendees to recruit more members and purchase products, leading to financial losses.
In response to these allegations, the RTP’s Consumer Protection Police Division (CPPD) has established a center to gather complaints.
On Thursday, the CPPD arranged for over 70 officials to staff this center as the police suspect there could be many more victims.
Acting with search warrants from the Criminal Court, CPPD officials conducted raids on nine locations connected to The iCon Group and its affiliates in Bangkok.
The search aimed to gather documents related to product procurement and sales to ascertain whether the company's primary revenue was derived from legitimate product sales or fraudulent crowdfunding.
