Thai AirAsia X Explores the Possibility of Operating Flights to Almaty Next Year
Tassapon Bijleveld of Asia Aviation expressed confidence in the potential of direct Thailand-Kazakhstan flights for tourism. Since September, visa-free access has boosted travel from China and Kazakhstan, with the arrangement set to end on February 29, 2024.
The aim is to attract Kazakhstani visitors to Thailand and promote tourism to Kazakhstan among Thais. Tourist numbers from Kazakhstan saw a significant rise to 154,015 this year, a stark increase from the previous year's 59,620, as per the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).
Currently, only Air Astana operates direct flights to Thailand, but increased demand calls for more airlines to offer direct routes, stated TAT's Siripakorn Cheawsamoot. TAT aims for 240,000 Kazakhstani tourists in the following year.
Aside from Kazakhstan, Thai AirAsia X is exploring new Middle Eastern markets, including Saudi Arabia, and will extend its Japanese offerings beyond Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. However, challenges acquiring planes and a slow Chinese market have delayed new routes to Beijing and reduced Shanghai flights.
Domestic tourism has rebounded to 2019 levels, a positive sign for Thailand's travel sector. Tassapon highlights the importance of domestic tourism amidst global economic and political uncertainties.
Earlier this year, the Airlines Association of Thailand, including seven airlines, sought government support, like extending jet fuel tax cuts. However, with the aviation sector's recovery, further government subsidies may be unlikely.
