Thailand Convicts Former Prosecutors Over Red Bull Heir Hit-and-Run Case
Two ex-prosecutors sentenced for misconduct in handling case involving fugitive Vorayuth Yoovidhya
A court in Thailand has convicted two former prosecutors for misconduct in connection with the high-profile hit-and-run case involving Vorayuth 'Boss' Yoovidhya, heir to the Red Bull energy drink fortune.
The incident occurred in 2012 when Vorayuth, then aged twenty-seven, allegedly struck and killed a police officer while driving a Ferrari, dragging the officer's body for over one hundred metres before fleeing.
The convicted officials include Net Naksuk, a former deputy attorney-general, who was sentenced to three years in prison, and another unnamed prosecutor who received a two-year sentence.
The court found them guilty of misconduct in assisting Vorayuth to avoid prosecution and deciding not to indict him.
Both defendants have denied wrongdoing and are appealing the verdict.
Vorayuth initially admitted to driving the vehicle but denied other charges.
After ignoring multiple court summons, a warrant for his arrest was issued five years later.
His current whereabouts are unknown.
The case has drawn significant public attention in Thailand and raised concerns regarding perceived impunity for influential figures.
Six other defendants, including former national police chief Somyot Poompanmoung, were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The court stated that “The actions of the defendants undermined the credibility of the justice system”.
