Thailand Cracks Down on Scam Call Centers and Human Trafficking Operations
Authorities intensify efforts against illegal accommodations and transport linked to transnational crime.
Thai authorities are intensifying efforts to combat transnational crime, specifically targeting scam call centers and human trafficking operations.
In a recent announcement, Pol Lt Gen Yingyos Thepchamnong, commissioner of the Provincial Police Region 2, highlighted the launch of the "Aran 68 Seal Border" operation, aimed at identifying and prosecuting individuals connected to illegal activities across border provinces such as Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat.
Businesses in the hotel and transport sectors have been warned against providing shelter or transportation for individuals involved in these criminal enterprises.
Penalties for non-compliance could exceed 5 million baht, with legal consequences including imprisonment.
As part of this crackdown, authorities conducted a raid on February 17 at a guesthouse in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo, which was found to be housing personnel connected to a scam call center.
The owner, aged 48, was arrested for operating without a proper license and was subsequently sentenced to three months in prison along with a fine totaling 5.52 million baht.
The operation also led to the arrest of two other guesthouses harboring scam-related staff, and five drivers associated with these activities.
Pol Lt Gen Yingyos noted that accommodations allowing illegal operations could face charges under the Hotel Act as well as the Anti-Money Laundering Act.
He emphasized the importance for businesses to refrain from engaging with criminal elements and encouraged the reporting of any suspicious activities to law enforcement.
The government’s strenuous measures come amidst escalating concerns regarding the role of such facilities in enabling transnational crime.
Authorities assert that the enforcement of these regulations is crucial in maintaining the integrity of Thailand’s borders and protecting the general public from the consequences of organized crime activities.
