Thailand Implements Passport Checks for Foreigners on Domestic Flights
Thailand now requires foreign travelers to present passports or other approved IDs for domestic flights in an effort to curb visa overstays amidst rising tourism.
Since Tuesday, foreign passengers must provide their original passport, or if lost, a temporary passport or a government-issued Thai ID or driver's license for domestic travel.
The regulation aims to tackle the growing issue of foreigners overstaying visas, particularly in tourist-heavy locations. Travelers must show a printed or electronic boarding pass from the airline; pictures of tickets aren't accepted.
The country anticipates nearly 35 million international tourists this year, nearing pre-pandemic numbers, while domestic flights have already seen around 280 million passengers, including locals, through November 2023.
