Thailand Regulator Greenlights Budget Mobile Plans Below 240 Baht
NBTC to permit operators to offer voice and internet-only packages under current price floor
Thailand’s telecom regulator has approved plans to allow mobile operators to introduce new monthly packages priced below 240 baht.
These affordable bundles will include voice calls and mobile internet only, excluding SMS and MMS services.
The move is part of a broader review of mobile tariffs initiated in 2020, when the market had three major operators.
Today’s structure remains unchanged even though the market has narrowed to two main operators alongside a minor state-owned player.
Acting NBTC secretary-general Trairat Viriyasirikul said the revision aims to reflect current market conditions, operating costs and to foster competition among providers.
Operators will be required to offer at least two types of starter packages—pay-per-use and flat-rate—to increase consumer choice and transparency.
The regulator is preparing draft guidelines for new rate ceilings and conditions.
These will consider the evolving telecom landscape, usage trends and costs per user.
Once finalised, operators will need to align their “Blue Flag” promotional plans accordingly.
