Thailand Says No Ceasefire Reached at ASEAN Talks as Border Committee Meeting Set for December Twenty-Fourth
Thai foreign minister confirms discussions continue after ASEAN meeting ends without agreement, with the General Border Committee identified as the next formal step
Thailand’s foreign minister has confirmed that no ceasefire agreement was reached during a special meeting of ASEAN foreign ministers addressing the situation along the Thai-Cambodian border, while emphasizing that diplomatic and military channels remain active.
Speaking after the meeting, the minister said discussions were constructive but complex, and that the next formal mechanism for progress will be the General Border Committee meeting scheduled for December twenty-fourth.
The ASEAN meeting, convened amid renewed cross-border tensions, focused on de-escalation, protection of civilians, and the restoration of stability in affected areas.
Thailand reiterated its commitment to peaceful resolution through established bilateral frameworks and underscored the importance of factual verification and clear mechanisms to ensure any future ceasefire is credible and enforceable.
According to the Thai foreign minister, the absence of an immediate ceasefire reflects the need for detailed technical and security discussions rather than a lack of political will.
Bangkok has consistently maintained that durable peace requires agreements reached through proper military-to-military coordination, particularly via the General Border Committee, which is mandated to address operational issues along the frontier.
Thailand also welcomed ASEAN’s continued engagement and facilitation role, noting that regional unity and respect for sovereignty remain central to resolving the situation.
Officials stressed that Thailand’s priority is the safety of civilians, the prevention of further escalation, and the restoration of normal conditions in border communities.
The upcoming General Border Committee meeting is expected to focus on confidence-building measures, verification procedures, and practical steps to reduce tensions.
Thai authorities expressed readiness to engage constructively and reiterated that Thailand remains firmly committed to dialogue, stability, and a peaceful outcome grounded in mutual respect and established agreements.
