Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin endorsed the legislation approach, stating the new law will be debated in parliament.
Anutin highlighted the bipartisan discussions involving Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsutin, Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, and Prommin Lertsuridej, among others.
The new regulations are expected to focus on medical and economic uses while preventing recreational use of cannabis.
In 2022, Thailand decriminalised marijuana, causing a boom in its retail sector and public concern over its misuse.
The Bhumjaithai Party, led by Anutin, has consistently advocated for cannabis regulation.
Anutin is set to discuss plans for a draft bill to regulate the industry in parliament.
The proposed effective date for these new regulations is January 1, 2025.
