UN Command and Thailand Honour Final Resting of Two Thai Korean War Veterans in Busan
Remains of Thai servicemen who fought under United Nations Command in the 1950–53 Korean War are laid to rest at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan
Two Thai veterans of the 1950–53 Korean War were solemnly laid to rest at the United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan, South Korea, in ceremonies marked by tributes from the United Nations Command and representatives of both nations.
The interments commemorate the enduring sacrifice of those who served under the United Nations flag alongside South Korean and allied forces during the conflict and reflect continued diplomatic and military ties between Thailand, South Korea and the United Nations Command.
The Veterans Ministry of South Korea announced that the remains of Manoch Pummaneekorn and Narong Kae Yeamniyom, who served with the Royal Thai armed forces in Korea, were repatriated to South Korea and subsequently buried in Busan’s cemetery, the only United Nations cemetery in the world dedicated to Korean War casualties.
The dignified ceremonies included honours accorded by the United Nations Command and representatives from the Thai Embassy in Seoul, alongside family members and government officials.
Pummaneekorn served with the Royal Thai Navy in strike operations during the war, while Yeamniyom fought as an army private in battles near the thirty-eighth parallel and took part in the challenging retreat of United Nations forces from northern Korea in late nineteen fifty.
Their burials follow a formal reception of remains at Incheon International Airport and a short service at the Seoul National Cemetery before transfer to Busan.
The United Nations Memorial Cemetery in Busan holds the graves of more than two thousand three hundred service members from fourteen nations who gave their lives during the Korean War.
It is a site of international commemoration where annual ceremonies such as the Turn Toward Busan event reaffirm the shared legacy of the multinational United Nations forces that defended South Korea.
The interments were organised with coordination between the Veterans Ministry of South Korea, the Thai Embassy and the United Nations Command, underscoring a mutual commitment to honouring the contributions of allied servicemen.
These ceremonies offer a dignified conclusion to the journeys of veterans whose service under the United Nations Command helped shape the security framework of the Korean Peninsula and the broader Indo-Pacific region.
