Vietnam Welcomes Cambodia–Thailand Ceasefire and Calls for Full Implementation to Restore Peace
Hanoi praises recent goodwill and ASEAN-led efforts, urging both sides to uphold commitments and pursue lasting stability after renewed border tensions
Vietnam has publicly welcomed the ceasefire commitments between Cambodia and Thailand, affirming its support for efforts to de-escalate the prolonged border tensions and restore peace and security in the region.
Officials in Hanoi emphasised that the goodwill shown by both governments, including agreements reached earlier this year and recent proposals under ASEAN mediation, represents a constructive step toward halting hostilities and fostering dialogue between the two neighbouring states.
Vietnam’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Dang Hoang Giang, highlighted the importance of ASEAN’s solidarity and collective action in addressing the situation, noting that Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair had played an important role in creating conditions for ceasefire discussions and confidence-building measures.
Vietnam welcomed the commitments already reached, including the earlier July agreement, the Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration in October, and the establishment of an ASEAN Observer Team to monitor progress and support implementation.
In statements delivered at a Special ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on the Cambodia–Thailand situation, Vietnam urged both sides to exercise maximum restraint, refrain from using force, fully implement the ceasefire commitments and resolve their disputes in accordance with international law, the United Nations Charter, the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia.
The Deputy Minister emphasised the hope that the latest ceasefire proposals would soon lead to a stable cessation of hostilities and allow displaced communities to return home.
Vietnam reaffirmed its readiness to continue working closely with other ASEAN member states and regional partners to promote appropriate mediation efforts and mechanisms aimed at helping Cambodia and Thailand restore peace and stabilise bilateral relations.
Hanoi’s stance reflects a broader commitment to regional unity and peaceful conflict resolution, reinforcing its role within ASEAN as an advocate for diplomatic engagement and cooperation on security issues affecting Southeast Asia.
