'Virtual Hospitals' Extend Palliative Care to Monks
Managed by the Bangkok-based Priest Hospital, which is dedicated to monks' healthcare, these virtual hospitals ensure better end-of-life care. Monk volunteers, trained through a rigorous program involving 70 hours of classes and hands-on clinical experience, operate these hospitals.
Due to religious precepts, monks often face limitations in receiving standard care when ill. Many choose to return to their temples, which typically lack proper palliative care resources. To tackle this, the Priest Hospital has expanded palliative care training to 13 health districts, with the goal to establish a network of virtual hospitals across all districts by 2027.
