Volvo Says Thailand EV Fire Not Caused by Battery as EX30 Recall Faces Scrutiny

Volvo Says Thailand EV Fire Not Caused by Battery as EX30 Recall Faces Scrutiny

Company separates latest incident from ongoing battery overheating defect affecting thousands of EX30 vehicles worldwide
Volvo Car Thailand has stated that a recent fire involving an EX30 electric SUV in Thailand was not caused by the vehicle’s high-voltage battery, even as the company continues to face regulatory pressure and consumer complaints tied to a broader recall over battery overheating risks.

The issue centers on the EX30 recall, which affects tens of thousands of vehicles globally due to a defect in certain battery modules that can overheat under specific charging conditions.

What is confirmed is that Volvo has instructed owners of affected vehicles to temporarily limit charging to around seventy percent while permanent battery module replacements are carried out.

In Thailand, the situation has drawn particular attention after multiple reported fire incidents involving the same model.

Authorities have launched investigations, requested formal explanations from Volvo, and reviewed whether existing safety measures are sufficient while repairs are still pending.

Around 1,600 vehicles in the country are understood to be affected by the recall program.

Volvo’s latest statement addresses a recent fire incident that initially raised concerns of a direct link to the known battery defect.

The company now says preliminary findings indicate the fire did not originate in the battery system.

However, it has not publicly confirmed the alternative cause, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Earlier incidents in Thailand and other markets had been associated with the overheating issue that triggered the recall in the first place.

Those cases led to interim safety guidance and a staged global replacement program for affected battery modules.

The broader technical concern involves lithium-ion battery thermal runaway, a condition where internal cell temperatures rise uncontrollably and can result in fire.

While rare in modern electric vehicles, such events are treated as high-impact safety risks because they can escalate quickly and are difficult to extinguish.

Regulators in Thailand are now evaluating whether Volvo’s current mitigation strategy is sufficient for consumers who must continue using vehicles under charging restrictions while waiting for repairs.

Authorities are also considering whether compensation or buyback measures should be required if delays extend or risk exposure is deemed excessive.

Volvo has stated it is continuing cooperation with regulators and proceeding with staged replacement of affected battery modules as part of its recall program.

The company is working to contain both the technical defect and the reputational impact of repeated safety concerns in a key electric vehicle model line.
