Washington National Guard and Thai Forces Strengthen Ties Through Joint Aviation Exchange
A multi-week aviation expert exchange in Thailand reinforces interoperability, safety practices and long-standing defence partnership between the United States and Thailand
Guardsmen from the Washington National Guard’s 96th Aviation Troop Command conducted a comprehensive Aviation Subject Matter Expert Exchange with Royal Thai aviation partners in Thailand that ran from late November to mid-December 2025, reinforcing a decade-long collaborative relationship under the U.S. Department of Defense’s State Partnership Program.
The exchange, held at multiple sites including Lopburi and Pattaya, brought together U.S. and Royal Thai Army, Navy and Air Force personnel to share knowledge on aviation operations, safety, maintenance, supply and training methodologies.
The programme began in Lopburi and Bangkok, where U.S. aviators worked with counterparts from the Royal Thai Army’s 9th, 41st and 2nd Aviation Battalions to review and improve aviation maintenance practices, standardisation processes and logistical support systems.
Participants identified key challenges and areas for future development in order to strengthen interoperability and reduce the risk of aviation mishaps.
This engagement extended historic ties between the Washington National Guard and Thai aviation forces, a partnership that has deepened through repeated exchanges since 2015.
Following the Lopburi leg, the engagement expanded to Pattaya at the invitation of Royal Thai Navy leaders, marking the first time the Washington Guard worked directly with the Royal Thai Navy under the State Partnership Programme.
U.S. and Thai personnel conducted deliberate discussions focused on expectation management, aviation safety and establishing a framework for sustained future collaboration.
The assessment highlighted critical capability gaps and yielded recommendations for ongoing engagement and professional development.
The aviation exchange operates within the broader context of long-standing military cooperation between the United States and Thailand, which also encompasses exercises such as Enduring Partners and Hanuman Guardian.
These programmes reflect shared goals of regional security, enhanced readiness and defence interoperability across multiple domains.
U.S. Indo-Pacific Command and Pacific Air Forces lead efforts to expand such cooperation, which includes technical exchanges, flight operations, and joint training activities, building on more than two decades of formal partnership between Washington National Guard and Thai forces.
Officials emphasised that these engagements do more than improve technical skills: they strengthen personal and professional bonds that underpin enduring partnership.
Both U.S. and Thai participants expressed their commitment to continue collaborative exchanges that advance safety, operational proficiency and mutual understanding.
