Xiaomi, the Chinese Smartphone Giant, Reveals Its Debut Electric Car
Beijing's tech behemoth Xiaomi, known for being the fourth-largest smartphone maker worldwide and a leader in producing tablets, smartwatches, headphones, and electric scooters, has introduced their inaugural electric vehicle.
Xiaomi, aiming to be a top global car maker, launched an electric sedan—SU7—projected for a 2025 market debut. Revealed by CEO Lei Jun, the car will feature Xiaomi's consumer electronics integration and be manufactured by China's BAIC with batteries from BYD and CATL.
Lei Jun targets a top-five global automotive rank for Xiaomi within 15 to 20 years. As part of China's robust EV industry, Xiaomi’s foray into vehicles is significant, given the difficulties foreign brands face in this largest auto market.
BYD leads China's EV market, outpacing Tesla with substantial sales, as per the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. Xiaomi, founded in 2010 with a direct-to-consumer online sales model, has faced US blacklisting over alleged military ties.
