Bangchak Begins Commercial SAF Production, Marking Thailand’s Entry into Sustainable Jet Fuel Era

Bangchak Begins Commercial SAF Production, Marking Thailand’s Entry into Sustainable Jet Fuel Era

First full-scale output from HEFA-based SAF facility signals shift toward low-carbon aviation fuel and emerging export ambitions
SYSTEM-DRIVEN transition in aviation fuel markets is accelerating as Thailand’s Bangchak Group moves from pilot-scale development to full commercial production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), positioning the country as an emerging supplier in a rapidly expanding global low-carbon aviation supply chain.

What is confirmed is that Bangchak Group has launched Thailand’s first commercial production of SAF at its Phra Khanong Refinery in Bangkok, using a dedicated standalone HEFA-SPK unit designed to convert renewable waste feedstocks, primarily used cooking oil, into aviation-grade fuel.

The facility is now operating commercially and is designed to produce SAF that meets international aviation fuel standards, marking a shift from testing and pre-commercial operations into sustained output and market delivery.

The production system is based on Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) technology, a widely used industrial pathway for SAF globally.

It processes waste oils and fats through hydrogenation and refining steps to produce synthetic paraffinic kerosene, a drop-in replacement for conventional jet fuel that can be blended into existing aviation fuel systems without engine modification.

This allows airlines to reduce lifecycle carbon emissions without changing aircraft or fueling infrastructure.

Bangchak’s facility is part of a broader strategy to build an integrated supply chain around waste oil collection, refining, and fuel production.

The company has developed sourcing systems that collect used cooking oil from households, restaurants, and commercial networks, feeding directly into SAF production.

This structure is intended to secure consistent feedstock supply, which is one of the main bottlenecks for scaling SAF globally.

The commercial launch follows a staged development process in which the facility had previously undergone readiness testing and initial production trials.

With operations now declared commercial, the company is preparing to supply both domestic aviation users and international buyers.

Export plans are already being positioned as part of Thailand’s entry into the global SAF market, where demand is rising due to airline decarbonization commitments and tightening emissions rules in major aviation hubs.

The strategic significance extends beyond a single industrial project.

SAF is currently one of the few viable near-term technologies for reducing emissions in long-haul aviation, a sector that is difficult to electrify due to energy density requirements.

As a result, governments and airlines are increasingly relying on SAF blending mandates and voluntary procurement programs to meet climate targets, creating structural demand growth that outpaces current global supply.

Thailand’s entry into commercial SAF production places it among a small but growing group of countries developing industrial-scale production capacity, particularly in Asia where aviation demand is expanding rapidly.

The Bangchak project also reflects a broader shift in energy strategy toward bio-based fuels and circular economy models that convert waste streams into high-value energy products.

While commercial output has begun, the broader market environment remains in early formation.

Many countries are still developing regulatory frameworks for SAF blending requirements, pricing mechanisms, and long-term procurement commitments from airlines.

This means early producers are simultaneously industrializing production and waiting for stronger policy signals to stabilize demand at scale.

Bangchak’s move effectively anchors Thailand into the emerging SAF supply chain at a moment when airlines, regulators, and fuel producers are aligning around decarbonization pathways.

The immediate consequence is that Thailand now has domestic production capability for a fuel category expected to grow significantly over the next decade as aviation transitions toward lower-carbon operations.
