CNN to Showcase Wat Arun in Live Global New Year Broadcast
CNN will feature the Wat Arun temple in its live coverage of global New Year's Eve celebrations, as announced by the Tourism Authority of Thailand. The famous Bangkok landmark will be spotlighted during December as part of TAT's "Thailand Winter Festivals" campaign to promote Thai culture.
Currently, a sound and light show entertains visitors nightly at Wat Arun and along the Chao Phraya River. A special fireworks display is also planned to ring in the New Year at midnight.
Bangkok will host New Year countdown events at several venues, including Central World, Icon Siam, Asiatique the River Front, and others, along with a range of temples welcoming the public for serene celebrations, such as Wat Arun and Wat Chetuphon.
Culture Minister Sermsak Pongpanich referenced a Suan Dusit Poll survey conducted among over 13,000 people, revealing a decline in those planning to attend temple prayers this year, with many favoring online participation or undecided. The survey also highlighted that many Thais view temple visits during the New Year as auspicious and a time for making merit.
Amid the festivities, police remind citizens that discharging firearms is illegal, with severe penalties, including jail and fines, especially if injury or death occurs. Last year saw 178 arrests for this offence.
