Dramatic footage from Bangkok: 27 killed in pub fire as massive flames erupted while revelers fled
At least 27 people were killed after a late-night fire broke out at a popular Bangkok pub. Authorities are investigating the cause after a performer described seeing smoke from an electrical switch before an explosion.
Thailand reported on Sunday that at least 27 people were killed in a fire that broke out at a pub in the capital, Bangkok.
Dramatic footage circulated by local media shows people fleeing the smoke-filled venue.
A huge burst of flame then suddenly shoots out through the entrance, forcing those still nearby to retreat.
Other patrons escaping from inside can be seen ducking beneath the flames as screams are heard in the background.
According to the reports, the blaze began shortly before midnight local time, at 11:57 p.m., at a pub called Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a popular entertainment venue in Bangkok's Chatuchak district.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control after about half an hour.
Footage released by emergency services showed numerous charred tables and chairs.
Images also showed an English-language sign above the entrance featuring the Irish whiskey brand Jameson.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul arrived at the scene and told reporters that 27 people had been killed and that additional victims had been taken to hospital.
He said the circumstances of the fire remained unclear and were under investigation.
Anutin said a musician performing at the pub told him he had seen smoke coming from an electrical switch near the stage before the power went out.
An explosion was then heard, and thick smoke quickly filled the venue.
He added that many of the victims were found in the restrooms at the rear of the pub.
