Elephant Patterned Trousers: The In-Demand Souvenir
Iconic for their traditional Thai elephant designs, these patterned trousers are a hit with tourists and have attracted the attention of online vendors looking to capitalize on their popularity.
A survey by The Nation on e-commerce sites using "elephant pants Thailand" revealed numerous sellers and various shipping options, indicating a highly competitive market.
Prices on Western platforms like eBay and Amazon range from 400 to 900 baht, with sellers generally emphasizing their Thai origin. There are usually no minimum order quantities on these sites.
Conversely, Asia's Alibaba offers the pants at lower prices, starting from under a dollar (35.8 baht) to around 4 dollars (143.4 baht). While these lower costs often come with bulk purchase requirements, the pants from Alibaba are also shipped from Thailand, India, or China.
The elephant depictions on pants from India and China vary from Thailand's classic designs, with a broader assortment of sizes, colors, and patterns.
A notable Amazon merchant, "Bangkok Pants," promotes their $19.95 (715.4 baht) yoga-appropriate trousers with free shipping and boasts over 300 sales in the past month, mainly from women practicing yoga.
According to a Thai clothing wholesaler, labeling the pants as Thai-made enhances their appeal and allows for higher pricing compared to Chinese alternatives.
Amidst a pricing war, sellers are being pushed to provide better-quality products and additional benefits like free shipping.
Following concerns about the influx of lower-quality, unauthentic Thai patterned trousers, Commerce Minister Phumtham Wechayachai tasked the Customs Department with creating measures to protect the nation’s “Thai soft power” campaign, focusing on safeguarding the traditional cat and elephant designs from substandard imitations.
