Floods in Southern Thailand Impact Malaysian Tourism
Severe Weather Causes Cancellations of Hotel and Tour Bookings in Hat Yai
Heavy rains have caused severe flooding in southern Thailand, particularly affecting Songkhla, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Yala.
These floods have disrupted travel plans for Malaysian tourists, leading to cancellations of hotel and tour bookings in Hat Yai over the next two weekends.
According to Songchai Mungprasithichai, president of the Songkhla Tourism Promotion Association, the cancellations are due to flooding in southern Thailand and severe weather in Malaysian states like Kelantan.
Before the floods, Hat Yai enjoyed a 70% occupancy rate during weekends.
Despite the challenges, tourism operators hope for quick relief to revive the market for December's festive season.
While the flood is expected to have a short-term impact, tourists are cautious, with some choosing to travel during the upcoming Chinese New Year instead.
As of November 24, 4.4 million Malaysian tourists visited Thailand, second to Chinese tourists with 6 million arrivals, per the Tourism and Sports Ministry.
