World Coal Use to Hit Record High in 2024 Despite Climate Concerns
IEA warns of rising emissions as coal demand reaches new peaks.
Global coal use is expected to reach an all-time high in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), as demand continues to grow, driven by China, India, and other emerging economies. The IEA forecasts 8.77 billion tonnes of coal consumption this year, marking the third consecutive annual record.
China accounts for over a third of global coal use, with demand reaching 4.9 billion tonnes in 2024 despite investments in renewable energy. Meanwhile, advanced economies like the United States and the European Union are seeing smaller declines in coal use. The IEA predicts coal use may peak in 2027 but warns rising energy demands from AI-driven data centres could hinder reductions.
