Nio Announces Firefly Expansion into Thailand and Teases Long-Range Battery Variant
Chinese automaker Nio prepares Thai market entry with its Firefly sub-brand and plans a 500–600 km range variant
Chinese electric-vehicle manufacturer Nio has revealed that its compact sub-brand Firefly will enter the Thai market through a local dealership agreement, marking a significant step in Southeast Asia for the Shanghai-based group.
The announcement was made by founder and chief executive officer William Li during a Q&A session, in which he also confirmed a new long-range battery version under development for Firefly, expected to deliver roughly 500–600 km (310–372 miles) of electric range.
This expansion forms part of Nio’s broader global rollout: previously the company stated earlier in 2025 that Firefly would launch in up to 16 countries across five continents, employing local dealership models in new markets to complement its direct-to-consumer showrooms.
In Thailand, a right-hand-drive configuration of Firefly’s debut model has already been spotted, confirming the company’s commitment to right-hand markets including Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand.
Firefly’s initial model, launched in China in April 2025, features a 42.1 kWh lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack and a China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) range of 420 km.
Nio said that the new long-range variant being teased for international markets will offer substantially greater range, aligning with growing consumer demand in Asia and beyond for higher-capability electric vehicles.
According to Nio president Qin Lihong, the strategy in Thailand will utilise a fully-localised dealership network rather than direct sales, enabling faster market entry and reduced operational costs.
This marks a shift from Nio’s earlier expansion approach in Europe and China and aligns with its aim to cater to right-hand-drive markets with improved flexibility.
The Thai move underscores Nio’s intensifying efforts to diversify globally amid increasing competition, tariff pressures in Europe and strategic shifts in battery and vehicle design.
For Thailand, the arrival of Firefly offers consumers a smaller, smart electric vehicle option and enhances the country’s positioning as an EV destination in Southeast Asia.
Nio executives say further details on pricing, launch timing and local partnerships in Thailand will be released in due course.
As such, the combination of Nio’s global ambitions and Thailand’s growing EV ecosystem sets the stage for a noteworthy development in the region’s automotive landscape.
