From December 16-18, the Department of Rainmaking and Agricultural Aviation launched efforts to combat high PM2.5 dust concentrations that were threatening public health.
Two Cessna Caravan planes carried out cloud seeding over areas in Chon Buri and Chachoengsao provinces, leading to thicker clouds and lower PM2.5 levels across Bangkok and neighboring regions.
The planes continued rainmaking maneuvers over Chachoengsao and Nakhon Nayok districts on Sunday, inducing light rainfall in nearby districts.
Director-General Supis Pitaktham explained that these actions helped move rain clouds over the capital, improving air quality by Monday morning, as confirmed by the Department of Pollution Control.
Supis noted the strategic nature of rainmaking for Bangkok, which depends on wind direction, and requires launching from Rayong or Kanchanaburi accordingly.
Additionally, to comply with international aviation standards, rainmaking flights must maintain a 70-nautical-mile distance from Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports.
