Labubu dolls, created by Hong Kong-born Kasing Lung, have gained significant popularity in Thailand.
The Thai Industrial Standards Institute (TISI) mandates that these dolls must meet industrial safety standards or the sellers face severe penalties.
TISI secretary-general Wanchai Phanomchai expressed concerns about the safety of these dolls, noting that they are categorized as toys stuffed with textiles.
Non-compliant producers and importers could face fines up to two million baht and jail terms up to two years, while offending sellers might be fined up to five hundred thousand baht and face up to six months in jail.
The surge in popularity was partly fueled by Thai K-pop star Lalisa “Lisa” Manoban, who posted a photo with a Labubu Macaron on Instagram.
The dolls, available in 18 and 28 centimetres, are produced by How2Work and Pop Mart.
