State Railway of Thailand Enhances Freight Services Between Laem Chabang and Bangkok
SRT aims to increase rail freight capacity to support import and export businesses, addressing logistical challenges and expanding infrastructure.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is taking steps to boost freight services between Laem Chabang Port in Chon Buri and Bangkok, as part of an initiative to support import and export businesses through improved transport efficiency.
On February 13, 2025, SRT governor Veeris Ammarapala conducted an inspection of Laem Chabang port and the Inland Container Depot (ICD) located in Bangkok’s Lat Krabang district.
The objective of the visit was to address existing logistical challenges and enhance the capabilities of rail freight services along the Eastern route, which is pivotal for the country’s logistics framework.
Currently, 24 rail freight trains operate daily between Laem Chabang and Lat Krabang ICD.
In the fiscal year 2024, the railway facilitated the transport of 465,329 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), equivalent to approximately 8,622 trains.
Governor Veeris emphasized the need to meet the growing demands of the industrial sector and international trade during his visit.
The inspection revealed that the Lat Krabang ICD is facing delays primarily due to issues concerning loading, unloading, and the rotation of railway carriages.
To mitigate these challenges, SRT plans to collaborate with various stakeholders.
Governor Veeris noted that there is a target to increase the daily operation of freight trains from 24 to 30 in the near future.
The Lat Krabang facility, which occupies 645 rai, has a current capacity to handle 600,000 TEUs annually and is expected to have the potential for further growth.
Rail freight transport is considered increasingly advantageous due to its efficiency, cost-effectiveness, energy savings, and capacity to transport larger volumes of cargo compared to road freight.
Improvements at both Laem Chabang port and the Lat Krabang ICD align with the Thai government’s strategy to promote sustainable economic growth, as asserted by Governor Veeris.
