Supachok Sarachat’s Controversial Goal Leads ASEAN Championship Best Goal Poll
Despite sparking debate, Supachok's strike dominates fan voting for the tournament's top goal
Thai midfielder Supachok Sarachat’s controversial goal against Vietnam in the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Championship final is currently leading the fan vote for the Best Goal of the Tournament. As of 4:00 p.m. on January 7, his goal had secured 81.41 percent of the votes on the official tournament website, far ahead of Vietnamese striker Nguyen Xuan Son’s goal, which garnered 18.13 percent.
Supachok’s goal, scored in the 64th minute after receiving a pass from Ben Davis, came from a powerful 25-meter strike that put Thailand ahead 2-1. However, it stirred controversy when Vietnamese players argued the ball should have been returned following an injury stoppage. Despite the incident, Vietnam went on to win the second leg 3-2, clinching the championship with a 5-3 aggregate score.
Other nominees for the Best Goal award, including goals from Singapore, Timor-Leste, and Malaysia, have received minimal votes. Supachok's goal is on track to win the poll, with Vietnamese fans ironically boosting votes in online forums.
